How to Download Pinterest Idea Pin Video (HD MP4, 2026 Guide)
Pinterest Idea Pins are the multi-page video format Pinterest launched to compete with TikTok. They are not downloadable through Pinterest's own Save button. Here is the working method.

Pinterest Idea Pins (sometimes called Pinterest Video, formerly Story Pins) are Pinterest's answer to TikTok and Instagram Reels. They are multi-page short-form video posts that can have up to twenty pages, each up to sixty seconds. Pinterest pushes them hard in the feed, and they often contain genuinely useful content (recipes broken into steps, DIY tutorials, fitness routines). The frustrating part: Pinterest deliberately does not let you download them to your phone. The in-app Save button only adds the pin to a board, it does not give you the file. Here is the working method in 2026.
What is a Pinterest Idea Pin exactly?
Idea Pins launched in 2021 as a TikTok-style competitor for Pinterest. Each Idea Pin is a multi-page post where each page can be:
A video clip up to 60 seconds long.
A still image.
A text-only page (rare).
A creator typically uses three to ten pages, building a sequence: ingredients, then preparation, then plating, for a recipe. Or step 1, step 2, step 3 of a tutorial. Each page auto-advances when the previous one finishes, or you can swipe through manually.
In late 2023 Pinterest started phasing the "Idea Pin" branding and now calls them simply Pinterest Video in newer interfaces. The underlying format is identical, just renamed.
Why Pinterest hides the download
Pinterest's business model depends on you using the Pinterest app or site to view content. Every download is a person who can re-watch your saved video without opening Pinterest, which means one less impression for advertisers. So Pinterest never built a download button. The Save button you see only saves to a Pinterest board on Pinterest's own servers, never to your phone.
There is no setting to enable downloads. There is no official Pinterest tool that does this. The only working route is a third-party downloader that calls Pinterest's API and pulls the MP4 the same way the Pinterest app pulls it for playback.
Method: Download a Pinterest Idea Pin step by step
- Open the Pinterest app, find the Idea Pin you want, tap the three-dot menu in the top right of the pin, then tap Copy Link. You can also share to your clipboard from the share sheet, or open the pin in the Pinterest website and copy the URL from the address bar.
- The URL looks like https://www.pinterest.com/pin/123456789012345/ or, for shared links, https://pin.it/abc123.
- Open our Pinterest Downloader in your phone's browser (Safari, Chrome, anything).
- Paste the link and tap Download.
- The tool detects the pin type. For an Idea Pin with multiple pages, you get: - Download Combined MP4 (all pages stitched into one video with the original transitions) - Download Page 1, Page 2, Page 3, etc. (each page as its own MP4 or JPG) - Download Audio (if the pin has background music)
- Tap whichever options you need. On iPhone, the file lands in Files > Downloads. Tap Share > Save Video to send to Camera Roll. On Android, files save to the default Downloads folder.
Combined MP4 vs individual pages
Pick Combined MP4 when you want to re-share the whole Idea Pin somewhere else (Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, your camera roll for reference). The stitched MP4 preserves the original page transitions and timing, looking just like the pin played inside the Pinterest app, minus the Pinterest UI.
Pick individual pages when you only care about one specific clip or step from the pin. For a recipe Idea Pin with eight pages, you might only need page five (the actual cooking step). Downloading just that page is faster and the file is smaller.
Old-style video pins
Before Idea Pins, Pinterest had single-page video pins. These are still around for older content. The same Pinterest Downloader handles them: paste the URL, get the MP4, no extra steps. You just get one download button (no multi-page picker) because there is only one video to download.
Pin board export
If you have an entire board of pins (Idea Pins or regular pins) and want to back up the whole thing, paste the board URL into our Pinterest Downloader instead of a single pin URL. The tool detects board URLs and returns a list of all media in the board with individual download links. This is handy for backing up a recipe board, a DIY board, or a moodboard before deleting.
Common Pinterest download mistakes
People expect the Pinterest Save button to download. It does not. It saves to a Pinterest board. Always use a third-party downloader for actual file downloads.
People copy the URL of the Pinterest home feed or search results. The URL must be a specific pin (pinterest.com/pin/...) or board (pinterest.com/username/board-name/).
People use a browser screenshot or screen recording as a substitute for downloading. This gives you a low-resolution capture with Pinterest's UI in it. Always use the dedicated downloader for original-quality MP4.
People assume Pinterest will notify the creator when their pin is downloaded. It will not. Pinterest does not log downloads or notify users when their content is accessed via direct URL.
Privacy and copyright note
Downloading a publicly posted Pinterest Idea Pin for personal viewing is fine. Re-uploading it as your own content somewhere else without crediting the creator is copyright violation. Always credit the original creator (their Pinterest handle is visible in the pin) if you re-share anywhere.
Pinterest creators can disable the Copy Link option on their pins through their account settings. If the Copy Link option does not appear in the three-dot menu, the creator has restricted sharing for that pin. There is no public URL to download, and no tool can bypass this.
Quick checklist
- The pin must be public (not restricted by the creator).
- Copy the pin URL (pinterest.com/pin/123 or pin.it/abc) from the three-dot menu or browser address bar.
- Paste into our Pinterest Downloader.
- For Idea Pins with multiple pages: pick combined MP4 or individual pages.
- For single-video pins: one download button.
- For boards: get every pin in the board.
That is the full Pinterest Idea Pin workflow. The format is still relatively new, so most general video downloaders do not handle multi-page Idea Pins correctly (they usually return just the first page). The dedicated Pinterest downloader path above gets you the entire pin in original quality with no Pinterest watermark.
Frequently asked questions
What is a Pinterest Idea Pin?
Pinterest Idea Pins (originally Story Pins) are Pinterest's TikTok-style format: short multi-page posts that can be all video, all image, or a mix, with up to 60 seconds of content per page. Idea Pins replaced traditional video pins as the default video format on Pinterest starting in 2021. Pinterest renamed them to Pinterest Video in some regions in 2024.
Why does the Pinterest Save button not download Idea Pins?
Pinterest's built-in Save button only adds the pin to one of your boards on Pinterest itself, it does not save the file to your phone. There is no in-app download to camera roll for Idea Pins, intentionally. This forces users to stay inside the Pinterest app to re-watch the content.
Can I download an Idea Pin as one combined video?
Yes. Our Pinterest Downloader stitches the multiple pages of an Idea Pin into one continuous MP4 file. You can also choose to download each page individually if you only need one specific clip from the pin.
Will the download have the Pinterest watermark?
No. Pinterest does not add a baked-in watermark to Idea Pin videos. Our tool fetches the raw MP4 from Pinterest's CDN, which has no logo, no username overlay, no Pinterest branding.
What resolution will the saved video be?
Idea Pins are typically uploaded at 1080x1920 (full vertical HD). Our downloader returns the highest-quality variant Pinterest serves, which is usually 720p or 1080p depending on what the creator uploaded. No compression applied by us.
Does this work for old-style video pins too?
Yes. The same Pinterest Downloader handles old-style single-video pins, Idea Pins, regular image pins, and pin board exports. Just paste any Pinterest URL (pinterest.com/pin/123 or pin.it/abc) and the tool detects what kind of pin it is.
